Meet Karen Kane, the opera fan who won the COC’s Guess the Season Contest, earning a pair of complimentary Grand Ring tickets!
She sat down for a Q&A with us after her win.
COC: What operas did you guess and why? Karen: I just tried to match the emojis with operas I know. I was lucky to guess a few correctly.
COC: Tell us about your first opera experience.
Karen: I did a paper in an advanced music course about
The Magic Flute. From there my love of opera was born. It’s still my favourite… and I still have that paper!
COC: What made you want to come back to the opera house?
Karen: I’ve always loved coming. I’ve seen several performances with the COC going back to the Hummingbird Centre days but my last was
The Barber of Seville so I’m anxious to come back.
COC: What do you love about this art form?
Karen: The beautiful melodies, the staging, the vocal pyrotechnics.
COC: What would you tell people who don’t know if they’ll understand or like an opera?
Karen: If you like classical music, you will enjoy yourself. The opera is easy to understand with the surtitles.
COC: What show are you going to use your prize tickets toward? Who are you going to bring? Karen: I think
Madama Butterfly! I’ve never seen it live but have always wanted to! I will bring my friend Adam who also enjoys opera—but probably not as much as me!
