Youth Opera Lab: The Art of Stage Direction

Register now for our first Youth Opera Lab of the season, in conjunction with Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.

Youth Opera Labs are free events for people aged 16-25. Join us for an interactive workshop with COC Teaching Artist and Assistant Director of Gianni Schicchi, Anna Theodosakis, and get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into the world of Stage Direction.

This event will take place entirely over zoom, and is open to youth aged 16-25 anywhere in the world. Participants will also have the opportunity to network and connect with opera fans from across the country.

Spring Break at the COC: Exploring New Opera

Hosted by COC Opera Teaching Artist Makenzie Morgan, Spring Break at the COC: Exploring New Opera gathers a group of artists and craftspeople to explore what a career in the performing arts can look like. Get a behind-the-scenes look at Fantasma, the company’s upcoming original Opera for Young Audiences for youth ages 12-18. These five hour-long sessions with the artists involved in its creation, explore what it's like to work with a composer, design props and costumes for the stage, and much more! 


Opera Makers: COC X St. Elizabeth C.H.S.
Weekly from April 22 to June 10, 2021

St. Elizabeth Catholic High School's Arts Connected program in Thornhill, Ontario allows students to specialize in one of six disciplines including Art, Dance, Drama, Digital Media, Vocal and Instrumental Music. Through the Opera Makers program, vocal music students will work with professional artists to explore every element of opera, from storytelling and composition, to performance and design. Students will create and perform their own opera. A digital performance is scheduled for early June.

Opera Makers: In Partnership with Building Roots and YEA!
Weekly from March 29 to June 21, 2021

Teaching artists from Building Roots and the COC are collaborating to facilitate weekly online workshops for YEA! (Youth Enrichment Academy) as part of their after school virtual programming. YEA! is an after-school initiative designed to address the gap in programming for youth in Regent Park and surrounding communities. Building Roots is a grassroots organization that fosters social cohesion through innovative projects that respond to community needs, envisioning vibrant, resilient neighbourhoods across Toronto's Downtown East.

School Programming

Opera Makers: COC X Heydon Park Secondary School
Weekly from October 9, 2020 to May 13, 2021

Opera Makers has partnered with Heydon Park Secondary School in Toronto for a community collaboration, aimed at closing literacy and numeracy gaps through arts integration and experiential learning. Heydon Park, the only all-girls secondary school in the TDSB; is piloting a new initiative for Grade 9 Credit Students. COC Teaching Artists will provide interactive, engaging programming and artistic support; as well as contributing to the accessibility and appreciation of opera, where participants of diverse backgrounds and education can engage in creative exploration of the art form. Students will also be introduced to Collaborative Sessions with COC staff. Integrating both visual & sensory components and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams whose careers align with vocational programming and highlight tangible entry points into creative vocations. A Spring performance is scheduled for mid-May.​
