COC: Don Giovanni is one of history’s most popular operas—what do you personally love about it?

Bintner: Don Giovanni is truly a masterpiece. The story is gripping and high stakes from the very first scene and the music visceral, dramatic and deeply human. It is a fascinating exploration of desire, death, and the supernatural, set to some utterly glorious music. It’s one of my very favourite roles to perform.

COC: The titular Don Giovanni is a notorious and sometimes-controversial character! How do you approach such a complicated role and what do you hope to bring to it?

Bintner: As with any role I take on, I start with the libretto and the score. When an opera is well written, everything you could possibly ask for is there. You just have to find it. As for notoriety or controversy, it’s not my place to judge Giovanni, but rather to discover and become the most honest version of the character that I possibly can.

COC: This is the third straight Mozart opera COC audiences will see you in, following up on last year’s Figaro and the previous season’s Magic Flute. How has your relationship to the composer’s work changed across these different roles?

Bintner: No matter the role, Mozart’s music inspires me to expand my artistry, and elevate my craft. It remains some of my favourite music to perform, and I am delighted to be sharing the genius of Mozart with COC audiences, once again!

COC: What are you most looking forward to in this spectacular new production?

Bintner: I am excited to take a deep dive into the mind and psychology of Giovanni, as we bring this visually stunning and dramatically nuanced production to life.

COC: While you’re in town, what’s one Toronto spot you hope to visit? This could be a favourite restaurant, concert venue, friend’s place, or anywhere else you like!

Bintner: Nowadays, it’s all about the little one, so my wife and I will definitely be visiting Riverdale Farm, which is one of our girl’s favourite spots in Toronto. It’s such a peaceful, unique refuge in the city and one that holds a lot of joy and fond memories for our family.
