• At Home With... Adrienne Clarkson

    By COC Staff

Over the next little while, we’ll be checking in with members of our Canadian Opera Company family to find out how they’re keeping busy at home during this time of physical distancing. In this edition, we learn what President’s Council Member, and former Governor-General of Canada, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson has been up to.

    Hilary Mantel and Jane Austen

Right now I am reading a wonderful novel by Hilary Mantel; it is not the third novel of her trilogy about Thomas Cromwell, but rather her astonishing tour de force about the French Revolution called A Place of Greater Safety, featuring Robespierre, Danton, and Camille Desmoulins. It is brilliant!

I have also started Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen which I have never read. I guess I was saving it for now....

    Marvelous TV

I am still following The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime.

    Experimenting in the Kitchen

Every night, I try to make a new dish. My latest discovery is a baked eggplant with an anchovy garlic sauce from Ottolenghi Simple: A Cookbook.

    A Piece of Music a Day…

I make a point of listening seriously to one piece of music a day and sometimes more than once. For instance, Schubert's Impromptu in G-flat major played by Horowitz and by a young, brilliant pianist, Eric Lu.

    Getting Those Steps In

And finally, I try to go for a 7,000- to 10,000-step walk in a different neighbourhood each day - the sidewalks are not very crowded these days!

The Canadian Opera Company and other arts organizations in Toronto are facing unprecedented financial challenges due to the effects of COVID-19. If it is possible for you at this time, we respectfully ask you to consider making a donation.
