• The Cinderella Outfit Challenge: We Have a Winner!

    By Cecily Carver

After 60 entries, thousands of votes, and a week of judging, we have a winner for the Cinderella Outfit Challenge!

Let's reacquaint ourselves with the judges:

Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman are the stars of CBC's hit lifestyle show, Steven and Chris.

FashionTelevision's Jeanne Beker is a style icon both in Canada and around the world.

Couturier David McCaffrey, of McCaffrey Haute Couture, designs unique wedding gowns for Canada's elite.

Alexander Neef is, of course, the General Director of the Canadian Opera Company. Last fall he was profiled in Sharp Magazine (go to pages 13 and 14 to see the profile)

We asked each of the five judges to rank the dolls in order of preference, and awarded "points" to each doll based on the ranking, with the prize going to the dress with the most points. The top choice was near-unanimous, with four out of the five judges choosing the same dress for the number one slot.

The winning doll and the runners-up will all be displayed in the lobby of the Four Seasons Centre during the run of Cinderella.

Here are our five finalists, starting from fifth place and working up to the winning entry:

Fifth place: "Made from Magic" by Danika Steckler

Steven says:  "Like the colour choice."

Jeanne says: "The beadwork is very well done and quite romantic."

David says: "The beading on the bodice is very well done. The use of the clustered beads in the multi-coloured mix over the top of the navy blue is an excellent use of colour compliment. The top of the bustline is perfect in that the multi-coloured clustered beads are not placed on this area of the dress. The hair works and compliments this style. The outfit has potential."

Fourth Place: "Paperella" by Yee Ting Lee

Jeanne says: "The innovation here really embraces the notion of thinking outside the conventional fashion box."

David says: "This design is most certainly unique in every way and the name of the outfit is well chosen. The bodice is complimenting to the waistline and the golden belt is a nice accent. The shape of the skirt is very good and the fan detail is well placed."

Alexander says: "The most unconventional and inventive entry; has a Spanish feeling to it."

Third Place: "Fashionably Late" by Marissa Engels

Chris says: "Looks like a true lady."

Steven says: "The dress is very couture."

Jeanne says: "Totally befitting our Cinderella, this piece would also translate well to a real life gala event."

David says: "The lace edge around the skirt is a great detail. The hair is well done up high with an excellent complimenting hair band and modern look. The chunky necklace is also very new and now and gives the outfit a slimming effect for Cinderella."

Second Place: "Golden Cinderella" by Maria Kubicki

Chris says: "Young, modern and very exotic."

Steven says: "Love the style of dress and color choices."

Jeanne says: "The use of gold and purple speaks of richness and royalty to me."

David says: "This design has all of the elements of an excellent design. First and foremeost is the way that the shape is so clearly defined with the fanned out accenting points at the waist line hitting all the right places. The details of the golden appliques flowing down the front of the skirt and tapering down the front of the hemline is very well done. The split in the side of the skirt is perfectly placed, and the neckline is new and refreshing in style. The hair is very complimentary to the entire look giving a youthfullness to Cinderella. Fit, fabric, colour and excellent style bring this outfit to perfection."

Alexander says: "Very beautiful and elegant dress, love the combination of blue and gold."

GRAND PRIZE WINNER: "A Classic Fairy Tale" by Sara Chalupnicek

Chris says: "The most opulent, with extraordinary detailing."

Steven says: "Beautiful and exquisite workmanship."

Jeanne says: "This design provides the perfect fantasy for our magical Cinderella character."

David says: "This design has the true feeling of a Cinderella with more of a Royal touch. The draping of the skirt is very unique and works well with the golden embroidery fabric. The finished hem is great attention to detail as it finishes the design completely following the excellent detail at the neckline and the waistline. The belt waistline detail is very in touch with the newest looks in wedding gown designs. The cut of the neckline is perfect for this look with just a slight scoop. The hair up and to the side is a true compliment to the design of the dress and flows perfectly."

Alexander says: "I love the opulence of the dress and the great attention to detail. For me, the most perfect entry and truly in the spirit of Cinderella at the Ball."
