  • Alexander Neef

    General Director

    Alexander Neef was appointed General Director of the Canadian Opera Company in June 2008. His career as an artistic administrator began at the Salzburg Festival in 2001, and proceeded to the RuhrTriennale in Germany, Opéra national de Paris and New York City Opera, throughout which he established strong ties with some of the world’s most important and influential artists. As of spring 2013, Neef has overseen 35 operas for the COC, including 11 new productions, three Canadian premieres, and six company premieres, and has been praised for the high quality of the COC’s casting, “raising the artistic and institutional reputation of the company” (Globe and Mail), and creating “the most visually and conceptually exciting theatre in Toronto” (National Post). Neef’s contract has been extended through to 2020/2021. (April 2013)


  • Johannes Debus

    Music Director

    Conductor Johannes Debus was appointed Music Director of the Canadian Opera Company in 2009, having made his COC debut in 2008 conducting War and Peace. Prior to joining the COC, he was resident conductor at Frankfurt Opera, and had already established himself in many of the great opera houses and festivals of Europe. As of spring 2013, he has conducted 10 operas and many special events for the COC, and has recently established a series of concerts for the COC’s Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre to showcase members of the COC Orchestra. When not conducting at the COC, Debus is very active with international engagements at prestigious orchestras, opera houses and festivals. Debus’s contract as COC Music Director has been extended through to 2016/2017. (April 2013)
